About Us
The three-star Hotel Szent János is located in the historic downtown of Mohács, on Szent Mihály Square. The hotel is housed in one of the city's oldest buildings, combining historic atmosphere with modern comfort. Our guests have everything they need for a peaceful rest and active exploration.
The prestigious history of Hotel Szent János dates back to 1976, when Mohács's first hotel, the legendary "Csele Hotel," opened its doors in the heart of the city. In 2008, the picturesque Danube-side building underwent a complete artistic transformation while gaining a new, dignified name: it was renamed after Saint John of Nepomuk, the protective patron saint of travelers on road and water. The hotel's latest chapter began in 2022, when the Mohács City Management and Ferry Navigation Nonprofit Ltd., under expert direction, reopened its doors after an exclusive rebranding and elegant renovation, with a concept combining contemporary luxury and historical atmosphere to continue the exceptional heritage of Mohács's hospitality tradition.
The hotel, with 49 rooms designed in a refined style offering city and Danube views, is one of the largest capacity accommodations in Mohács and its immediate surroundings. Due to its location, the hotel provides excellent accommodation not only for those seeking relaxation but is also an ideal venue for business travelers due to its proximity to the city center.

Museums and Exhibition Spaces
Kanizsai Dorottya Museum
Our city's museum presents the culture of Mohács and its surroundings, as well as of the South Slavic peoples of Hungary, enriched with the oldest masks of the world-famous Busójárás (Busó Festival). The institution is the only base museum in Hungary for the Croatian, Serbian, and Slovenian minorities, and as such, it has nationwide collection rights. In addition to the permanent exhibition "Meeting of Peoples at the Mohács Danube" in the new museum building, several temporary exhibitions offer countless attractions each year! Besides the unique glazed and black ceramic collection of hundreds of pieces, the costumes, furniture, and everyday objects of the various ethnic groups living in Mohács, as well as memorabilia of the city's history, provide an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Busó Yard
The pride of Mohács is the six-day winter-chasing folk custom, the Busójárás, which was declared part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2009. The Busó Yard was created in the city center, so that visitors can get a taste of the unforgettable atmosphere of the centuries-old carnival tradition on any day of the year. In the Busó Yard's display workshops, visitors can gain insight into the activities of local craftsmen related to the event. The complex's services include viewing the interactive exhibition space with guided tours, as well as presenting and exploring the temporary exhibition and the display workshops.
Mohács National Memorial
The Historical Memorial opened its doors in 1976, commemorating the heroes of the tragic Battle of Mohács on August 29, 1526. The park area is the final resting place of 1,700 soldiers. The Mohács National Memorial was expanded with a new reception building in 2011, which presents the background, course, and consequences of the Battle of Mohács. From the building's lookout level, there is a beautiful view of the flower petal-shaped cemetery. A special exhibition space has been set up in the underground part of the building, where a presentation related to the battle can be viewed. The site, which has officially held the rank of National Memorial since 2012, also hosts events that commemorate the battle and its historical era.
Saint Nicholas Water and Treadmill
During the 30-40 minute guided tour, visitors can learn about the history and operation of the mill, including its water wheel, transmission, and traditional millstone grinding equipment. During the visit, guests will learn about the history and operation of the treadmill, which can also be tried out. One of the country's most extensive flour sack exhibitions can be seen in the watermill of Mohács. In the dry house of the watermill, there is a paper mill set up (with prior arrangement) where visitors can try paper dipping. The mill is also an excellent event venue, and there is an opportunity for outdoor cooking in the impressive oven.
Statues and Public Art
Statue of King Louis II
In 2006, Mohács held a series of events for two months to honor the 500th anniversary of King Louis II's birth and the 480th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, which was also the ruler's death. Imre Varga, a European-renowned sculptor, was commissioned to create the statue. In the center of the pedestal stands a 12-meter-high cross covered with chrome steel. Its size fits the proportions of the arcades and the church. Its surface has been given scales similar to a tree trunk, from which light is reflected.
Busó Statues
In our city, sculptures created by sculptor Ferenc Trischler can be admired at two locations, symbolizing the multi-ethnic nature of Mohács, the importance of local identity, and the Busójárás, which has been declared part of UNESCO's world heritage. One of the sculpture groups was established under the "Mohács Gate" project and stands in the roundabout at the intersection of the two main roads. The other was realized on Deák Square as part of "The Development of Busójárás Venues" project.
Flag-Bearing Sculpture Groups
The symmetry of Széchenyi Square is stabilized by two flag-bearing sculpture groups that stand in the center axis of the eastern and western sides. Both were made by sculptor Jenő Martinelli (1886-1949). In 1932, the statue of three maidens was created in memory of the liberation from Serbian occupation, while in 1937, the limestone-carved sculpture group was set up on the western side on the 250th anniversary of the battle that ended Turkish rule.
Churches
Battlefield Memorial Church (Votive Church)
The construction of the Battlefield Memorial Church is an example of unparalleled national unity. The foundation stone of the Votive Church was laid in 1926, the 400th anniversary year of the war with the Turks, by Gyula Zichy, Archbishop of Kalocsa. In the foundations of the building, one-kilogram memorial soil packages taken from the courtyards of three thousand Hungarian villages, fifty-two towns, and twenty-five county halls were placed. The Byzantine-style Catholic church was completed based on the designs of Aladár Árkay and Bertalan Árkay.
Bishop's Church
Also known as the Suburban or Holy Cross Church, it was built in 1742 by Zsigmond Berényi, Bishop of Pécs. Not only the entrance of the church but also its interior decoration is richly adorned. It is one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Mohács. Above the entrance, there is a richly decorated, large Berényi coat of arms, with a statue of Saint Nicholas standing above it. The church has a single nave with a semi-circular sanctuary.
Monastery Church
Its construction began in 1724 by monks belonging to the Bosnian province. With the support and financial assistance of the local bishop, it was completed by 1771. The church's exterior appearance represents the transitional style of subdued Baroque. The main altarpiece is the most significant value and attraction of the church. Its theme: Saint Stephen offering the crown. The painting was created by István Dorfmeister and was donated to the monks by Bishop György Klimó.
Battlefield Memorial Chapel
Built by Bishop József Király in memory of those who died in the battle. In the Classicist chapel, two paintings by István Dorffmeister can be seen. One depicts the Battle of Mohács in 1526 and the tragedy of King Louis II, while the other shows a scene from the so-called "Second Battle of Mohács," the victorious battle of 1687.
Serbian Orthodox Church
The Serbs seeking protection in our country from the Turkish danger built their church in 1732, with its slender tower rising 48 meters high above the city. Its layout preserves the traditional Orthodox church order. It is made entirely of wood. Inside, the iconostasis (a wall of icons) separating the sanctuary provides an exceptional sight. The work of Hungarian painter Mór Csóka was based on the design of Serbian painter Uros Prédity's iconostasis in Óbecse.
Recreational Opportunities
Mohács Swimming Pool and Thermal Bath
Located on the banks of the Danube in a unique natural environment, the bath welcomes guests looking for healing, regeneration, sports, and family relaxation all year round. Thanks to the services of the bath, it offers opportunities for quiet relaxation and carefree splashing while not disappointing those who want to enjoy the beneficial effects of thermal water. The harmonious unity of family togetherness, active rest, and pampering tranquility enriches both children and adults with an unforgettable experience.
Danube Promenade and Boat Experience
The city's Danube riverbank section is an ideal place for a pleasant walk or bicycle ride. Regular river cruise services, as well as pre-arranged private boat trips, make the discovery of the Danube even more exciting.
Duna-Dráva National Park
Wild riverside forests, special flora and fauna – the charm of the national park is unique. It offers excellent opportunities for hiking and nature walks. An interactive exhibition at the visitor center showcases the natural values of the region.
Cultural Programs
Busójárás (Busó Festival)
One of Hungary's most popular and well-known winter-chasing carnivals, held at the end of February or early March each year. In 2026, it will be held between February 12 and 17. The Busójárás, a folk custom of the Šokci (a Croatian ethnic group) in Mohács, has been part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage since 2009 and is a Hungarikum (unique to Hungary). During the six-day festival, in addition to the traditional Busó parade, numerous accompanying events, concerts, craft fairs, and gastronomic experiences await visitors.
